Wait...... What Training?!?!?!

Grandma's Marathon Training
Week 9

Running didn't happen this week.  It's true and confirmed.  Sports med doctor says, femoral neck stress reaction.  BOO!

I poke fun at this meme.  Mentally, I'm doing OK.  I DO need to run, but I'm keeping myself busy with cross training and other cardio ie: the elyptical.   My marathon is 10 weeks away and I have another two weeks of solid no running.   Doctor said she wants a total of 4 weeks complete rest from running.   When I told her I had a race this weekend, her response was "No you don't".  Then the runner in me said "Well, I wasn't planning on actually RACING it."  She laughed and said "NO" again.  If I dwell on the fact that I can't run,  I will go absolutely crazy!

A good friend of mine said... would you rather run Goldy's this weekend or Grandma's Marathon in June?  My response was "Ha!  That's like asking me if I'd save my child from a burning building."  I do have a flare for the dramatic - all my friends will tell you that.  BUT, the fact is... Grandma's is my ultimate prize, so if I have to scratch some races I signed up for then so be it.  It's just money.... right?!?!  Oh wait... let me just throw that money right out of the window.

The doctor was very pleased that I had already taken two weeks off to nurse my leg.   She said that put me two weeks farther ahead with my healing process.  She sounded confident that I would make it to the starting line on June 18th,  so I'm going to clear my head of the negativity and enjoy the other aspects of working out.

The week was pretty much status quo.  Nothing uber exciting happened with my training.  I'm now up to a 1 minute and 40 second plank!  Wahoo!  It's pretty funny as I near the end of the plank because I make crazy noises trying to hold the pose for 10 more seconds.   I can feel that I'm getting stronger so that's good anyway.

This weekend, I had Goldy's 10 Mile around the University of Minnesota campus.  It's my alma mater, so I was very excited to run the race.  Oh wait... I can't run.  I seriously considered not showing.  That's where that throwing money out the window again comes in.  But, I put on my big girl panties and walked the 5K distance!  It was 19 degrees.  IN APRIL!  Basically, I froze my you know whats off!  I still managed to have a fabulous time!  One of the most fun race experiences of all.  See why from my last post here.

This was my first ever race that I didn't run.   It was humbling to say the least.  I was seriously jealous of all of the runners crossing the finish line.  The last 1/4 mile ran around the stadium with the finish line ending at the 50 yard line.  It was super cool and would have been great to run down the chute.

On a different note, it always seems that your nutrition takes a nose dive when you're not doing as much exercise.  I know with all the Easter candy still left in the house mine nutrition has been awful.  What's that you say?  Of course not!  I would NEVER hide in my pantry away from my kids so they don't see me eating their candy.

Once my training gets off and running again, I will have 10 weeks of training, with the last week being taper.  My trainer tells me not to worry about missing 4 weeks in the middle.   In the meantime,  I'll look forward to linking up the blog for the Weekly Wrap with Holly and Tricia.  I love to read my fellow bloggers wraps for the week too!

  1. You're being really smart! I would totally have walked that 5k, no matter how hard it would have been for me. Soon you'll be back on the road, like you haven't missed a beat!

  2. Gina, I was forced to throw my Chicago Marathon money right out the window. How's that for the ultimate in DNSing? You are smart. Just keep your focus on Grandma's. It will be your grand prize for healing and staying off your feet now. It will also be victorious! Oh my, planks kill my back but I'm determined to keep adding time. Thanks for linking with us.

    1. I just read that Marcia! It's hard to not finish a race isn't it. But black ice is not joke. I bit it big time this winter on ice. Mother nature can hand us some nicer weather anytime soon!!

  4. Well, I'm a Hawkeye (did you know that?), but this race sounds like a fun one to consider. I love the 10-mile distance because it's like a short & quick half marathon ;-) You are doing the right thing, as difficult as it is. I had to sacrifice a half last summer in order to run Grandma's a week later....and I had no regrets in doing so. Grandma's certainly wasn't a PR, but the race was wonderful none the less. Hang in there!!

  5. Sorry to hear that you have not been able to run. I would be pulling my hair out! Having 10 wks to train for a marathon is still a good amount of time. You'll be back to the swing of things in no time.

  7. Oh no! Sorry to hear that! Well, if there's anything I've learned from other bloggers, it's that an injury doesn't have to be a death sentence to your race. Just look at what Holly did with her pool running! I love that you still did your 5K but walked it.
